Abortion
Services
Surgical
Abortion
If you choose
to have a surgical abortion, you will meet with an experienced,
professional counselor who will privately explore with you your
feelings about the abortion. She will also explain the surgical
procedure, followup care, future birth control and answer any questions
you may have. You will be asked to give small urine and blood samples
in order to perform lab tests. These tests include: hematocrit,
serology, urinalysis and a pregnancy test. The doctor will determine
if an ultrasound and/or additional tests are required in individual
cases. You will be cared for by experienced, board certified or
board eligible obstetricians and gynecologists who have privileges
at local hospitals. The method of abortion used is Vacuum Uterine
Aspiration (suction D&C). You may choose either local anesthesia,
IV sedation or sedation for pain management during the procedure
which takes approximately ten minutes to perform. The average stay
at the clinic is approximately three hours, but be prepared to stay
longer if necessary. A friend or relative may accompany you to the
clinic.
Medical (Non-Surgical)
Abortion
If you choose
to have a medical abortion, you must be less than 56 days from your
last period. You must also live within a 45 minute drive of our
facility. The medical abortion is a process which requires a minimum
of 2 visits to the clinic. On the first visit, you will meet with
an experienced counselor. She will explain medical abortion and
answer any questions you may have. You will have routine laboratory
tests performed as well as an ultrasound examination to confirm
the pregnancy. The doctor will perform a pelvic examination and
an oral dose of Mifeprex will be taken in the office to begin the
process. At the first
visit, you will be given a 200 mg oral dose of Mifepristone which
is an anti-progesterone medication. Misoprotol tablets will be provided
for use 2 days later. Misoprostol will cause uterine
contractions and bleeding. You must return to the clinic on day
7 for evaluation; in cases where there is no bleeding, the doctor will
provide a
second dose of Misoprostol and you must return to the clinic on
day 14. On day 14, if you have not aborted,
it will be necessary to perform a surgical procedure. The non-surgical
procedure is 96% effective in terminating a pregnancy. However,
the medication could cause serious birth defects if a pregnancy
were to continue.
Types of
Sedation Available
Local Anesthesia:
Local Anesthesia reduces discomfort associated with the surgery
by producing a numbing affect to the cervix. You will be fully awake.
IV Sedation:
The IV Sedation combination of medications is administered by injection.
The medication will relax you and you will feel drowsy. The sedation
will reduce anxiety and pain. You may experience partial or complete
amnesia.
